Week 1
Understanding the Basics
- Research Drone Types: Learn about different types of drones (e.g., quadcopters, fixed-wing) and their specific uses.
- Read the Manual: Familiarize yourself with your drone's user manual to understand its features and controls.
- Study the Regulations: Understand local laws regarding drone flight, including registration requirements and no-fly zones.
Week 2
Ground School
- Online Courses: Enroll in an online course about drone operation, safety, and best practices.
- Watch Tutorials: Find video tutorials on platforms like YouTube that cover basic flying techniques and tips.
- Join Forums: Engage with drone communities and forums to ask questions and gain insights from experienced pilots.




Week 3
Simulator Practice
- Use a Flight Simulator: Download a drone flight simulator to practice flying without the risk of crashing a real drone.
- Master Basic Maneuvers: Focus on learning essential maneuvers like takeoff, landing, hovering, and turning.
- Simulate Different Conditions: Practice flying in different simulated weather conditions to build your skills.

Week 4
Real Flight Practice
- Start with a Safe Space: Choose a large, open area away from people and obstacles for your first flights.
- Practice Basic Flights: Begin with short flights, focusing on takeoff, hovering, and landing.
- Advance Your Skill*: Gradually introduce more complex maneuvers, such as flying in circles, figure-eights, and small altitude changes.
- Record Your Flights: Consider recording your flights to review and learn from your performance.

By following this plan and dedicating time to practice, you’ll be well on your way to confidently flying a drone by the end of the month!

Safety First
Always prioritize safety by maintaining line-of-sight, avoiding crowded areas, and respecting privacy.

Stay Relaxed
Take breaks if you feel overwhelmed and stay relaxed to improve your focus.

Seek Feedback
If possible, fly with an experienced pilot who can provide guidance and feedback
What You´ll Need To Participate
PC or Laptop with internet access
Smartphone with internet access
Quadcopter Drone with operation manual. Drone may be purchased through Smart Drone Academy.
Transportation to get to Lincoln Park. Optional for in person drone operation and safety training.
Time schedule
The 30 minute virtual courses are held Sunday afternoons at 4PM every month of the year. In person training is weather permitting and will be rescheduled as needed by Smart Drone Academy Staff.
For students under 13 years of age, a parent or guardian’s permission and attendance are required at all in-person sessions. All participants must complete the following forms below for participation.
